EXAVER Examiner Refresher Course

Portada

Course Description

The EXAVER Examiner Refresher Course is a self-paced online program designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and abilities of examiners involved in the administration and evaluation of the EXAVER English Language Proficiency Tests.

Across six interactive modules, participants work with real-world scenarios, ethical considerations, exam procedures, and hands-on grading using authentic EXAVER materials. The course emphasizes professionalism, standardization, validity, reliability, and fairness, supporting accurate, consistent, and fair assessment decisions.

The course is delivered via Eminus and must be completed within the established start and end dates. It includes readings, interactive activities, discussion forums, self-evaluations, and concludes in a mandatory face-to-face assessment session where participants’ grading performance is collected and reviewed to determine individual authorization per level (A2, B1, B2). This process safeguards validity, inter and intra-rater reliability in EXAVER examinations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate updated knowledge of the professional, ethical, and procedural standards required of EXAVER examiners.
  2. Apply best practices in the administration of EXAVER proficiency tests, ensuring fairness, consistency, and security.
  3. Align speaking assessment decisions with the CEFR and EXAVER’s standardized marking criteria across A2, B1, and B2.
  4. Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion within the EXAVER framework through reflective, ethical practice.
  5. Make evidence-based grading decisions that support validity and rater reliability.
  6. Demonstrate grading accuracy in the face-to-face assessment session; authorization to examine will be granted per level based on performance.

Assessment & Authorization

The EXAVER Examiner Refresher Course includes both formative and summative assessment to ensure that all examiners demonstrate the accuracy, consistency, and specialized judgment required to evaluate EXAVER candidates effectively.

A: Online Components:

Throughout the six modules, participants complete readings, interactive activities, self-evaluations, and discussion forums designed to consolidate their understanding of EXAVER procedures, ethics, and marking criteria. These online components allow participants to practice and reflect before the final assessment but do not determine authorization to serve as examiners.

B: Face-to-Face Assessment Session (Mandatory):

This session represents the final and decisive stage of the course. During this session, each participant will individually evaluate a set of standardized EXAVER speaking videos corresponding to the three exam levels (A2, B1, and B2). Participants’ individual scores are collected and compared against established benchmark scores determined by EXAVER’s team of expert raters. The analysis focuses on the accuracy of each examiner’s grading and the consistency of their scoring across different candidates and levels—key indicators of inter-rater and intra-rater reliability. Based on these results, EXAVER will decide individually whether each participant meets the required standard to serve as an examiner for each level. Examiners may be authorized for one, two, three or none of the levels (A2, B1, B2), depending on the precision and reliability of their grading.

This rigorous process ensures that only examiners who demonstrate valid, reliable, and fair scoring performance are authorized to participate in EXAVER exam sessions, thereby maintaining the credibility, fairness, and validity of the Program.
